Starting and ending in the historic harbour village of Ahuriri, just outside of Art Deco Napier, you'll spend your first night here, at a waterfront boutique hotel, easing yourself into the wonderful surrounds. The next day you'll head off at a leisurely pace, cruising past the hub of activity in Ahuriri's port and perhaps even stopping at one of the quaint cafes for a coffee before leaving. The beauty of the self-guided tour is that all the options are laid before you, both in the detailed itinerary given to you by the knowledgeable team and also passing before your eyes as you cycle the route. You may decide to stop off anywhere along the route; this is the freedom this style of tour affords. As long as you reach your accommodation each night, you can choose where, from all the suggestions, you stop and where you pedal past.
The tour will take you on a thorough exploration of the area, along wide, flat, smooth paths that traverse diverse landscapes, from the estuary trail through protected wetlands, along coastal paths with sublime views across the sea, to Cape Kidnappers and past gorgeous beaches. You'll wind inland over farmlands, sharing the track with sheep and cows, cruise alongside orchards and kiwifruit fields, bike beside rivers, and, of course, through lush wine country.
The tour includes stops at the best of the region's wineries, from NZ's oldest, Mission Estate, to the epic Gimblett Gravels Appellation, famed Church Road winery, bohemian Crab Farm and many others in between. At Church Road, there will also be an exclusive 'Behind the Scenes' tour to participate in; you'll also enjoy cycling the 'wineries ride' around Gimblett Gravels as you visit a plethora of cellar doors welcoming you along the route.
At the end of each day, you'll be rewarded with divine dining and indulgent lodgings as you stay in some of the best accommodation available in Hawke's Bay. Highlights include a five-course degustation dinner prepared by renowned chef Malcolm Redmond, who is also your host for the night at the exquisite Breckenridge Lodge on the second and third nights of the tour.
On the fifth day of the tour, you'll have a day off the bikes and be treated to a private, customized half day tour by car around the region taking in the 'Best of the Bay', tailored to your specific interests; the rest of this day will be at your leisure.
This really is a tour of immense diversity and will see you cruise your way through this lovely landscape, soaking up the wildlife and natural surrounds from the saddle of a comfortable bike. Aside from the feel-good factor that comes with an active and interesting break, you'll become enamoured with this charming region and its quiet, majestic beauty, friendly, welcoming people, exquisite wines and delightful ambience.
