Itinerary Details

  1. Day 1Ahuriri to Taradale via the Water Trail Estuary ride

    Departing the historic port area of Ahuriri, follow the coastal trail north through the seaside suburb of Westshore to the outskirts of Bay View. Perhaps enjoy a coffee stop at the Snapper Café, or a wine tasting at Crab Farm winery, before continuing your cycle on the stunning section of trail that passes through the Ahuriri Station, a working farm and wildlife sanctuary. Following the Ahuriri estuary, you can see many native and rare birds in this D.O.C. conservancy before arriving in Taradale. A visit to the Mission Estate and Church Rd wineries is a ‘must do’ to end the day.

  2. Day 2The Puketapu Loop

    The ‘Puketapu Loop’ is a real favorite trail for locals and visitors alike. Follow the Tutaekuri River west: the first section of the trail is shaded by pine trees and the smell of wild fennel perfumes the air. Continuing past kiwifruit orchards and farmland, you arrive in the rural community of Puketapu, home of the iconic Puketapu Pub. A member of the classic N.Z. pubs network, an excellent place to enjoy a hearty lunch in relaxed style before continuing the loop back to Taradale on the opposite side of the river with views over apple orchards and vineyards. Visits to the Otatara Maori Pa Site and the Silky Oaks Chocolate Factory and Museum are also highlights of this route.

  3. Day 3Rest day in Taradale

  4. Day 4Taradale to the Gimblett Gravels Wine Region

    Departing Taradale you join the Tutaekuri River trail and cycle through beautiful orchard, market garden and vineyard country to the coast at Awatoto (8 km/4.9 mi). From here you turn back inland on the Ngaruroro River trail and cycle a further 9 km (5.5 mi) to historic Oak Avenue for a scenic cycle under the magnificent old trees. Continuing to the small settlement of Bridge Pa, you end the day visiting some of the fine wineries of the Gimblett Gravels appellation. Sample the wine and enjoy the ambience of the cellar doors until your transfer to your Havelock North accommodation, a short distance away.

  5. Day 5Tuki Tuki Loop (30% off-road trails)

    This morning you depart Havelock North to cycle the Tuki Tuki Loop, renowned as one of New Zealand’s classic road rides. Perhaps enjoy an early coffee at the cyclist-friendly ‘Tandem Café’ before cycling up the gentle climb of Waimarama Rd to then descend into the Tuki Tuki River Valley. Continuing past Craggy Range Winery you cross the river at Red Bridge before cycling 9 km (5.5 mi) along Tuki Tuki Rd, taking in five smallish hills which add up to 320m (1049ft) of climbing in total. The scenic views over the river valley and vineyards are stunning and the lack of cars makes the cycling very relaxed.

    On reaching Moore Rd you join the limestone cycle trail, which follows the river, and return to the coast at Te Awanga. Here you can enjoy visits to Clearview Estate Winery, Elephant Hill Winery, the British Car Museum and Sheep World. At the end of the afternoon, you and your bike will be transferred back to your Havelock North accommodation.

  7. Day 7Havelock North to Ahuriri

     Departing bustling Havelock North with its excellent shopping and cafes, you follow the Tuki Tuki river trail through classic Hawke’s Bay orchard country to Black Bridge. The trail to Clive then takes you through a low lying wetlands region with many native birds and great views of the coast. Enjoy refreshments in Clive before continuing on the coastal trail, following Marine Parade to the Napier CBD, a world-renowned Art Deco treasure. Spend some time admiring the unique building facades and perhaps take a visit to the National Aquarium of N.Z. before cycling around the port to end your adventure back in Ahuriri.
