Starting in the historic port village of Ahuriri, Napier, you will cycle the short distance to the National Tobacco Building, one of New Zealand’s most photographed buildings with its distinctive Art Deco style. This building is now home to the Tony Bish Urban Winery and it's recommended that you make a visit to see the barrel room, sample his excellent Chardonnay and learn about his unique ‘Golden Egg’ wine making process.
Joining the cycle trail, you will make your way past fishing boats and old port warehouses to the Ahuriri Estuary. The trail meanders for approximately10 km (6.2 mi) through this low-lying wetlands area, home to many species of wading birds and other wildlife. As you cycle along it is sobering to reflect that prior to the 1931 earthquake this area was all a vast tidal inlet before the land lifted 1.8m (5.9ft) in the mighty shake.
On reaching the suburb of Taradale, you will leave the estuary behind and cycle approximately 1 km (0.62 mi) to the acclaimed wineries of Mission Estate and Church Rd, where you can visit their cellar doors and try the wines. The final 6 km (3.6 mi) of your ride loops back through sheep farming country to complete the circuit back to Ahuriri.
