Capturing the essence of Japan in a nutshell is not easy, as its love of the modern world combines complexly, if beautifully, with its spellbinding history. This sensational cycling adventure goes the extra mile to uncover the culture, history, countryside, and most importantly, the people, that make this such a wonderful country.
Supported by a knowledgeable tour leader, your journey begins in the former Japanese capital, the ancient city of Kyoto. Here history runs deep; a visit to the birthplace of the Geisha is a must. Heading out of the city, the cherry blossom trees await in the district of Arashiyama. This place is a nature lover’s paradise, with Zen gardens, bamboo forests, and manicured gardens, peacefully coexisting with historic temples and shrines.
Next up is the fascinating tiny island of Shikoku where captivating coastlines await you. On the way you’ll see local fishermen hauling their catch, and spot Buddhist pilgrims making their way to holy temples.
You’ll be able to rest your weary legs for a day in the intriguing city of Kochi. The 400-year old Kochi Castle grabs headlines here, but the beaches, parks and onsens also makes this an excellent day off.
The final few days of riding will take you through evergreen forests, along wild rivers and amongst quiet towns. The scenery is astounding and there’s enough time for another Japanese activity: Washi paper making.
The best day is saved for last: you pedal the legendary Shimanami Kaido cycleway over glistening water and catch stunning panoramic views over the scattered archipelago. It’s a great way to conclude this epic adventure.
