The support vehicles carry your luggage and provide a place for you to rest if you get tired. The staff will make any running repairs on your bike. During the rides, they will keep you stocked up with water, fruit, soft drinks, snacks, and energy gel, and will make sure you get a nice cold drink – and usually a cold towel as well – at the end of each ride. Eating local Vietnamese food is a feature of most of the food in the tour. The tour operator will make sure there are always plenty of carbohydrates and protein on the menu.

Don’t forget adequate hydration is as important as a good meal and so you should always make sure you carry enough water with you. In some stages, there is nowhere to “top up” along the way. Follow your guide's instructions for each stage. The tour operator recommends you use a hydration pack with at least 2l capacity, rather than water bottles.

Feel the real Vietnam, on two wheels

We booked a 6 day mountain bike trip [tour now amended to a 5 day trip] in North Vietnam with Marcopolo Travel - fully supported, with bikes, guide, back-up van, meals, drinks and accommodation all provided. It was great and good value for such a memorable experience. Our guide, Hil, spoke good English, was knowledgeable and helpful, and ensured our small group was fully prepared for each new challenge - and always stayed safe. The bikes were reasonably high spec alloy frame Giants, with hydraulic brakes. The route was challenging, with some big climbs - up to 2,000m a day, and up to 75km. But it was well planned, so while we are normally road-bikers, not mountain-bikers, and in our 50s... we still made it! The off-road sections allowed us to traverse some truly stunning scenery with mountains, forests and paddy fields well off the beaten track. Most of the on-road sections took quiet rural back-routes that enabled us to get a real feel for the real Vietnam. And people everywhere were friendly and welcoming. The exclusively Vietnamese food was plentiful, along with regular snack and fluid stops. It was hot throughout. We overnighted in a mix of home stays in little villages, a National Park lodge and two star hotels. We have only one quibble with the otherwise highly professional trip. The chain sets on all the bikes were worn and needed replacing and some of the brakes needed a little tightening. That said, Hil was always there with spanner, Allen key etc to tweak the bikes. This trip is not for novices... But if you enjoy your cycling, you'll love it.
