  • Where does the tour start and end?

The tour starts and ends in Napier, on the east coast of New Zealand's north island.

Access to Napier is relatively straightforward with an airport on the edge of the town (Hawke's Bay Airport – NPE) and regular flights with Air New Zealand from all the major cities in NZ. Driving is also an option with a direct motorway link between Auckland and Napier (5 hours) or the more scenic Winery Drive from Wellington to Napier (5+ hours via the Martinborough Wine region). Your tour includes transfers so please advise your arrival details once to hand.

  • How long is the tour? How many days riding?

The tour is 5 days long with 3 days of riding.

  • What's the tour like?

The total cycling distance is 105 km (65.2 mi) over the 3 days of riding, with more than 80% using the off road, easy and flat trails. There is an option to add on an extra 20 km (12.4 mi) ride if you would like on day 2 but that is completely up to you. There are lots of stops along the way and the trails are safe, mostly flat and ideal for a leisurely cycle break.

  • Is a bike included?

Yes. The tour operator provides lightweight alloy framed Scott ‘hybrid’ touring bicycles with 24 indexed gears, fully equipped with lock, pump and toolkit (although the guides will generally be on hand to fix punctures and minor mechanical problems). All bikes are meticulously maintained and a wide range of sizes are kept; female specific saddles are also available. The tour operator does not provide helmets automatically, as they tend to find people prefer their own, and sizing and fit is quite personal; however, they will always have helmets available for use. Tandems may also be available on certain tours by special request.

  • How big is the tour group?

The group is limited to 16 so will be relatively small but big enough to find like-minded companions if you wish.

  • Is there a minimum age?

Yes, 18 is the minimum age for the tour.

  • If I'm traveling alone, do I have to pay more?

If you wish to have your own room or are traveling solo then a single supplement is payable.

  • Are there any group discounts?

For groups of 6 or more, booking altogether, there is a small discount given per person. You will need to all book together to get the discount.

There is another, smaller, group discount available for 4 persons booking together who are also willing to share a four-person/quad room. Again, you will need to all book together to get the discount.

  • What sort of support is there on the tour?

You have the services of a local guide cycling with you. A support bus carries all luggage and will always be available for anyone at any point during the day. If, for instance, you want to take a day off the bike, or if a particular day seems a little hard, the bus will take you for as long or as little as you wish it to. The guides are enthusiastic experts on the local area and will be able to sort out any problems or special requests that you might have.

Barry and I cannot be more positive with our comments on the tour...staff were all lovely...did their upmost to make each day very memorable and enjoyable...lovely vineyards for tastings and lunches, where the food was always lovely and fresh, and lots of it. Napier/Hawke's Bay is such a great place, with so much to offer...it was a great trip.

A wonderful trip around Hawke's Bay with Tour de Vines

Having loved our Beechworth to Bright ride with Tour de Vines last year, we decided to give the Hawke's Bay trip a go. It could not have been better. Lovely countryside, easy riding, an amazing variety of wineries to visit and sensational food. We have been to New Zealand a few times, but Hawke's Bay is now my favorite area. The quirkiness of Napier, with its fabulous Art Deco buildings, the friendly people, beautiful countryside, it's how the world should be!
The organization was outstanding. Takaro Trails actually runs these two trips a year for Tour de Vines, and they are absolutely brilliant. They maintain the friendliness and ambience that we enjoyed so much with Damian last year and pack a heap of fantastic stuff into the short time.
If you go (and I highly recommend it) spend a couple of days in Napier before the trip and you won't be disappointed. We went trout fishing afterwards and explored the area enroute to Wellington. It was a memorable holiday, and only a 4 hour flight!
