People are proud to boast about skiing or snowboarding the Alps, but few can say they have cycled them. This spectacular two-wheeled journey provides you with the opportunity to quite literally scale new heights and tackle some of the famous Alpine passes where Giro d’Italia legends were born.
The pleasant town of Bormio is your home for the week as you embed yourself firmly in the Alps. Renowned for their use at the Ski World Cup, the world class facilities here will provide you with the perfect surroundings for resting your legs after some breath-taking climbs. And wow what an array of ascents there are for you to tackle on this trip. First up is the Gavia Pass, a highlight from the Giro d’Italia roads. You will be able to feel the adrenaline coursing through your veins as you pedal on and up into the mountains, while the rush of a descent into the UNESCO World Heritage listed Valle Camonica is an excellent reward.
Every night of this epic ride you will be greeted back in Bormio with a superb meal, using local produce, and a collection of exquisite wines.
Back out on the famous roads in the Alps, you will head across the border into Switzerland to sample another pass. A sighting of the Bernina glaciers while riding on will be sure to lift your spirits while you do battle with the change in altitude. Like any professional rider tackling such climbs it is important to take the perfect amount of rest time. This is factored into the week with a far gentler day of riding around the calming presence of Lake Como.
With your legs refreshed the final two days pack in some more exceptional riding and scenery, including the Passo del Mortirole, or as it is otherwise known - ‘the pass of all passes’. There is also the chance to gaze at the impressive Ortler mountain ranges in the Alps. Every single bead of sweat is worth it throughout the week as you marvel at such spectacular views and reflect on how you rivalled the accomplishments of Giro d’Italia legends.
