  • Where does the tour start and end?

The full tour runs from Darwin in the Northern Territory to Broome in Western Australia over 23 days. The separate stages are broken up as follows:

    Stage 1: Darwin to Katherine
    Stage 2: Katherine to Kununurra
    Stage 3: Kununurra to Broome

Darwin International Airport (DRW) is just 12km from the first hotel. Catch a taxi from outside of the airport for around $35. Shuttles also operate which are approximately $30pp. The full tour starts at 3 pm on day 1 so plan to arrive in plenty of time. Rooms are available for the night before if you would like to arrive earlier still.

Broome International Airport (BIA) is just 2km from the final hotel and an airport transfer can be arranged with reception.

  • How long is the tour? How many days cycling?

The full tour is 23 days long with 18 days being cycling days.

  • What's the tour like?

You will average 124km per day and ride on bitumen roads through the outback scenery. You'll travel in a small group of 10-20 riders and the trip has a difficulty rating of 8/10 with no significant hills but long distances.

  • How fit do I need to be to complete the tour?

You really need to be a reasonably keen cyclist –not necessarily fast, but consistent. Try to sit on an average speed of at least 20-25 km/hr on the flat and build your distance in training to 120+km for two days straight. Aim to ride close to the average daily distance of your chosen tour on each of the days if you can. This will usually put you in a good position to be ready for the tour.

The tour operator has a training schedule specific to each ride which will be sent to you after you place your deposit, however, the tour operator is more than happy to send this to you earlier when you are considering the tour –just ask us for a copy and we will get it out to you straight away.

  • Can I hire a bike?

If you want to hire a bike just let us know and we can give you some options. Given the remote location for this tour, there may be freight costs involved. You may wish to bring your own seat and/or pedals to give you that little bit of ‘home comfort’ on your hire bike.

  • What items can I carry during the ride?

It's suggested that you carry a spare tube, a full water bottle and your own personal goods such as phone, wallet and rain gear, on your bike with you. The Tour Operator will transport your luggage, drawstring day bags, food & extra water. A more detailed list of things to bring and not bring is on our ‘Tour Preparation Guide’ which is sent out to you before the ride.

  • What type of luggage should I use?

Keep it simple. Strong, medium sized bag/case with good handles weighing no more than 15kg. As everyone is living out of their luggage, please limit your outfits. Most people wear less than half of what they bring. If you bring a very heavy bag we may ask you to divide it into two lighter bags. For security, write your name clearly on all bags. The Tour Operator needs to carry a lot of equipment for outback tours which limits their available luggage space, so we ask everyone to be mindful of this when packing. A more detailed packing tips list will be sent out in the ‘Tour Prep Guide’ after booking your place on the tour.

  • What food options are available?

Check tour details for meal inclusions on your ride. The emphasis is on fresh food and balanced diet with plenty of carbohydrates, proteins, fruit and vegies. The Tour Operator has successfully catered to most dietary requirements, however in the outback this can be a little tricky at times so a degree of flexibility is required. Feel free to contact us with any questions. Most meals are included as part of the tours; however you may be required to purchase some meals.

Great organisation, interesting routes, adaptable to meet changing circumstances and situations and most important, friendly and focused on what needs to be done. Very highly recommended.

I enjoyed the trip very much. I thought rest days were really well placed in terms of taking a break from cycling and being able to use them to see some really fantastic parts of the country. I like being able ‘rest’, but also do something that doesn’t take up the whole day. I appreciated Richard and Jo incorporating their knowledge from their previous trip into this tour - a real personal touch. I way exceeded my own expectations of how far I thought I would ride. I’ll take some credit, but also offer some credit to you just in the way the trip was designed and organised...I know that Jo and Midge work hard behind the scenes, but thanks to Richard and Lou for everything they do on the tour.
