  • Where does the tour start and end?

The tour starts in Queenstown and ends in Christchurch.

Fly into Queenstown Airport (ZQN) and out of Christchurch International Airport (CHC).

  • How long is the tour? How many cycling days?

The tour is 5 days long with all 5 days being cycling days.

  • What's the tour like?

The Lake Dunstan & Otago Central Rail Trail is graded introductory. There is a mix of wide and narrow trails with a few undulating hills. The gorge section of the Lake Dunstan Trail on day 1 is optional as it is more difficult with some short hills, narrow track and tight corners. You will need a reasonable level of fitness and the tour operator suggests 2 hours of cycling per week for the three months leading up to your trip. They recommend training on compacted gravel trails and completing a multi-day ride prior to your trip to get used to being in the saddle for long periods of time. The more training you have done on hills and on compacted gravel, the more enjoyable your trip will be.

  • Who will lead the group?

The guides are one of the biggest assets of the tour operator and they have pride for their level of quality and high standards. Once the trip reaches 8 people,  two expert guides will join to maximise your enjoyment and overall experience. You’ll know you’re in safe hands as all of the guides are certified in first aid and CPR and many of them are trained bike mechanics. They come from all walks of life but the guides have a common desire to give you the best possible experience, fun and lots of fond memories to take home with you.

We had a really good trip with Sean and Fiona. I was unwell and not able to fully engage in the cycling, but it was no trouble with the fully supported trip. I was able to ride in the bus and be dropped off to do short streches of the trail as I felt able. Sean and Fiona took great care and with their friendly and inclusive personalities made the trip that bit more special. Thank you.

We had a wonderful trip being very well looked after by our guides Shaun and Fiona. A very happy group with absolutely nothing lacking in our meals and accommodation we would highly recommend [the tour operator] for another trip.

What a fantastic trip with a wonderful guide and support bus driver and a great company. It was an opportunity to meet people amidst beautiful Autumn scenery, what a setting! I loved the daily rides on such a stunning trail, the stops for photographing, the dinners where we shared our daily experiences and laughter. Everything was well organised and supported and I would recommend travel with [the tour operator] to anyone. In fact, I am already planning my next trip with them!!
