Spicing up your travels with a new approach these days can take some doing, but by grabbing a bike to explore the sizzling land that is Sri Lanka you really are thinking outside of the box. This small but lively island packs in so much and with each rotation of the pedals you will discover spectacular beaches, legendary temples, fragrant tea plantations and the most welcoming people ever. Sri Lanka has it all and this epic adventure will uncover every element of it.

Sri Lanka is in many ways the road less travelled, flying under the radar compared to its larger neighbour India. But that is what really makes it special and you will quickly notice that as you set off on quiet back roads along the sparkling blue coastline and marvel at the fishing villages and the colorful boat sails.

Heading inland you can improve your cultural and spiritual understanding of the country with a tour around Dambulla’s rock cave temples. The alluring charms of the country really are unparalleled and you can further explore these when riding out to the dramatic rock fortress of Sigiriya.

Sri Lanka boasts 2000-plus years of culture and it is particularly noteworthy when you ride into places such as the 10th century capital of Polonnaruwa - home to an archaeological park that is packed with temples – or Galle, an old port town full of fascinating Dutch-colonial buildings.

Galle is where we take the final ride into but before that there is still so much to savour. For instance, there are the tea plantations that you’ll ride to and stop at to sample the produce. And of course, there’s the ‘small’ matter of riding to Udawalawe National Park to witness wild elephants in the flesh.

Being well rested is important so half-way through you also get a day off to take in the delightful hill town of Kandy where you can also view the Temple of the Tooth, home to Buddha’s tooth.

And towards the end of the trip, take on some glorious cross-country cycling to really soak up Sri Lanka’s atmosphere before hitting the beach in the afternoon. As you round things off in Galle, it iscertain you will be walking away with mildly aching legs, but a heart and head full of wonderful memories.
