You will need to be a competent road rider with stamina and a good level of fitness, you should be able to cycle comfortably for up to 6-8 hours or around 100km/60miles per day, day after day, with some extended uphill ascents. Fabulous scenery, great accommodation and food beyond our expectations on this trip. I was deeply grateful that our guide, Bas, curated the route each day taking into account traffic, weather and the group so we weren't required to complete the anticipated 80-90 km a day. Quite honestly, the heat on our trip would have made completing that distance daily a challenge that would have been beyond me. Bas went out of his way to make sure we all had a great experience, and his attention to detail and conscientiousness was on display every single day.

We would have liked more days cycling along the coast and fewer inland days, but we understood the changes in the route based on traffic and terrain. We appreciated being in a small group (six) so that transfers were quick, efficient and possible. We were disappointed that the Ramada Inn provided a sad excuse for a continental breakfast - way below the rest of the trip experiences. Do the training so you're fit enough for the long days. Be prepared for heat in January.

A great way to experience the beauty of the northern part of NZ's North Island. If coming from a colder climate, be ready for the possibility of extreme heat and humidity. The sun is much more intense in NZ than it is in the northern hemisphere.,
