Twin Coast Rail Trail
This 4-day tour will take you from the Bay of Islands on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island to the Hokianga harbor on the west coast. The Bay of Islands, known now for its good sailing, has a rich history. Named by Captain Cook, it was home of the first European early settlers, and the historic towns dotted along its coast contain the oldest wooden and stone structures in the country. Horeke, on the beautiful Hokianga harbor, is home to New Zealand's oldest hotel. Much of the tour follows the disused Bay of Island's vintage railway.

Starting in Auckland, you'll be transferred to Helena Bay and start cycling on quiet back roads to Russell. You'll enjoy riding the ferry to the coastal town of Opua and cycle on the disused railway line to Kawakawa and tranquil scenic roads to Kaikohe.
You'll bike from Kaikohe to Okaihau, gently climbing and passing through a short tunnel. The views of the surrounding countryside are excellent. From Okaihau, you'll enjoy a wonderful descent, with a final flat run to a luxury B&B. On the way back to Auckland, you'll stop at the Waipoua kauri forest and the Kauri Museum.
There is the option to add an extra night in Russell to enjoy some of the activities that are available here (kayaking, boat tours, swim with dolphins, visit Waitangi Treaty Ground etc).
