Dubbed the ‘eighth continent’, Madagascar is a magical land rich in natural sights and spectacular landscapes. It has long been a nature lover’s choice destination. With thousands of animal and plant species that cannot be found on other shores, this is a special opportunity to grab your cycling gear and pedal through rainforests, deserts, mountains, beaches and every other landscape known to man.

This idyllic trip combines cycling and hiking to explore Madagascar in its entirety. Accompanied by knowledgeable guides, every pedal and step brings with it a new discovery.

Things kick off gently in the capital of Antananarivo, where you can explore the city’s history and get acquainted with your fellow riders. You get your first taste of the road in Antsirabe, but it is on day three when things really crank into gear.

A circuitous route leads you climbing up to two gorgeous crater lakes, both of which come with intriguing legends. An exhilarating downhill caps off the day in style.

Gradually you are pedaling towards one of Madagascar’s most famous sons – the Ranomafana National Park. The rainforest is best explored on foot and you’ll soon understand why Conservation International has labelled the country a biodiversity hotspot.

Keep your eyes peeled for the famous golden bamboo lemurs and the dazzling array of birdlife. After a decent four to six hour trek, the hot springs that await are much-needed.

Squeeze in some time for a cup of tea in Madagascar’s only plantation, the Sahambavy Tea Estate. Enjoy souvenir shopping in the city of Fianarantsoa.

As the tour enters the final days, there is still so much to see; you’ll explore the Andringitra Massif, a dramatic range of mountains, and the vast Horombe Plateau which will leave you speechless. There’s still room for some cycling and hiking around the Jurassic-era I’Isalo National Park before things are rounded off with a beach bum day right at the end of the trip. What more could you want from this amazing country?
