You’ll ride a total of 240 km over six cycling days on this tour, which is designed for the leisure cyclist seeking the perfect balance between Sri Lanka’s iconic cultural landmarks and its quieter, off-the-beaten-path countryside. Your rides will take you along a mix of paved and gravel or dirt roads through ever-changing rural landscapes. Each day includes a vehicle transfer at the start or end of the ride, helping you avoid busy highways, keep distances manageable, and focus on the most scenic and enjoyable routes.
From Days 2 to 5, you’ll pedal mainly across the flat rice plains, while Day 6 brings a rewarding climb into the tea-growing highlands, and Day 7 features a gentle descent into the spice region. The scenery constantly transforms — from coastal views and coconut groves to rice paddies, vast reservoirs, thick jungles, lively towns, and tea-covered mountains.
Along the way, you’ll visit the Sacred City of Anuradhapura, the Rangiri Dambulla Cave Temple, the Ancient City of Sigiriya (Lion Rock), and the Ancient City of Polonnaruwa — all UNESCO World Heritage Sites where local guides will share fascinating insights into their rich history. You’ll also visit the Sacred City of Kandy and take in sweeping views over the Knuckles Conservation Forest, bringing your total to six of Sri Lanka’s eight UNESCO sites. You’ll take part in a hands-on tea-making workshop in Gammaduwa, and for many riders, the most unforgettable moments will be the warm encounters with Sri Lanka’s friendly locals, always ready with a wave or a cheerful greeting.
Your trip is fully supported, with your guide’s expert knowledge ensuring you always know what lies ahead in terms of distance and difficulty. You’ll also have a steady supply of water and refreshments to keep you energised throughout each ride.
Suitability: This is a moderately challenging trip, ideal for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness. Except for Day 6, which includes about 850 meters of climbing, and Day 7, which has roughly 650 meters of descent, most rides are flat or gently rolling. Daily distances average around 40 km, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the sights and relax. You’ll mostly ride in the mornings, with afternoons free for exploring heritage sites. While some stretches involve gravel, sand, or uneven rural roads, these do not require technical skills — just steady handling and stamina for consecutive riding days in tropical weather. A support vehicle will always be nearby for anyone who needs a break.
Biking Conditions: About 80% of the route is on paved surfaces — a mix of smooth tarmac and some rougher, bumpy sections — while the remaining 20% consists of vehicle-width gravel or dirt roads. Most of your journey will follow quiet rural roads with little traffic, though you’ll occasionally share the road with cars, buses, tuk-tuks, motorbikes, and the occasional wandering cow. A few short sections along busier roads are unavoidable, especially near city areas or major attractions. Rain is possible year-round in Sri Lanka, and rides typically continue rain or shine — though your guide may adjust routes based on comfort or conditions. It’s all part of the adventure!
The trip was well coordinated. A good balance of cycling and visiting the historical sites. The guides were courteous and went out of their way to assist.

No other form of travel lets you cover distance whilst learning so much about a country. Sampath was an outstanding guide providing quality equipment and a knowledge of the local environment, we learn about local lifestyles, farming methods, local history, fish, animals, birds, trees and crops and always had time to stop and take a photo. Most importantly we had fun and Pudda our driver was always close by if needed and great entertainment during or trip
