The Mekong Delta is a name that conjures up images of a maze of rivers, a carpet of green, natural sights everywhere, floating markets, Khmer pagodas and a cuisine to die for. Put simply: it is the perfect place for a cycling adventure that explores all of these beautiful elements.

Accompanied by local and knowledgeable guides this is a trip that dives deeply into what makes this region tick. Spurred on by the river and its gorgeous array of sights, you will keep the wheels turning with ease through this spectacular region of Vietnam.

Straight away you crank into gear with a ride on the first day after getting acquainted with your tour companions and your new method of transport. At every turn there is something to steal your gaze such as fragrant fruit orchards, gorgeous rice paddies and pretty villages. Your first lunch is on a spectacular island across the river; your first night is at a cute homestay, where Mr and Mrs Ba will immediately make you feel like one of the family.

Exploring the Khmer architecture and the local way of life is a big part of this epic adventure and this is particularly evident when you pedal further south towards Can Tho. En route the pretty lotus flowers sitting on the Ba Om Pond are quite the sight to behold, but it is the nearby temple where local women await their fortune and the Buddhist Temple School that are the true star attractions. Here you can respectfully marvel at the temples, and, with the support of the guides, speak to some of the local people in attendance.

The last day includes the trip’s top highlight – a journey to the Phong Dien floating markets. These markets are the lifeblood of the community in Can Tho and are fascinating to observe. With few motorized boats, the picture is a blend of serenity and organised chaos as vendors and locals trade goods. You can feel free to take photos and see if there are some gems to buy.

After raiding the markets it’s time for one final gorgeous lunch together before you transfer back to Saigon to reflect on a truly wonderful ride along the Mekong Delta.
