  • Where does the tour start and end?

The tour starts and ends in Melbourne, Australia. Melbourne Airport, (MEL - also known as Tullamarine Airport) services domestic and international flights. Melbourne is a central hub for trains and buses.

The tour starts at Southern Cross Station, Melbourne early (approx 6:30am) on the Thursday morning. If you are staying close to Southern Cross Station you will just need to cross the road with your luggage and bike to meet everyone at the station. If you have a car you may be able to leave your car at the hotel for the duration of the tour at a rate set by the hotel - enquire directly with the hotel.

The ride will finish on Sunday in Albert Park (5km from Melbourne CBD). You will have a 100km ride starting at 9am from Sorrento. It is possible to catch a plane home that evening (Sunday), however, the tour operator suggests that you do not book anything earlier than 6pm if possible just in case you are delayed for any reason during your ride (flat tyres, weather, injury, mechanical problems etc). Staying in Melbourne on Sunday night will give you more leeway if that is possible for you.

  • How long is the tour? How many days cycling?

The tour is 6 days long with all 6 days being cycling days.

  • What's the terrain/surface like?

The cycling takes place on sealed roads throughout the tour with undulating coastal roads and some hills.

  • What about non-riding partners/part-time riding and bus support?

The tour operator is happy to accommodate non-riding partners and part-timers who only want to ride part of each day or only certain days. They will generally try to allocate pickup points along the route every day. The entry price will be the same for part-time riders and usually non-riders as well depending on their tour plan.

The support bus is there to support the tour and also pick up riders who need to jump in for any reason. The bus is also some-times used for part-time riders who only ride certain sections of each day – these are often partners of someone else on the ride. This vehicle can be quite popular on some days – especially long days or days with big hills! There is no shame in riding in this bus so if you are considering a tour and are ‘in the ball-park’ in terms of your fitness and preparedness, but not 100% sure if you will be up to it on the toughest days, just go for it – the vehicle and staff will be there to help out. It’s better to give it a try than to miss out altogether.

  • How fit do I need to be to complete the tour?

This tour has been specifically designed for those who want to ride at a slower pace and don’t want to ride too far. The average distance per day is 41km (25mi) which is very achievable even for non-cyclists who have a reasonable level of fitness. For non-regular cyclists, the tour operator still recommends training for the ride as even though you may be physically fit, you should still spend some time getting your body (and different body parts) used to being on a bike for extended periods. This may pose a bigger challenge than cardio or aching muscles. Remember there will always be a support vehicle for those who wish, or need, to be transported for a portion of any day.

There is a training schedule specific to each ride which you will be sent after you place your deposit, however, the tour operator is more than happy to send this to you earlier when you are considering the tour – just ask us for a copy and we will get it out to you straight away. As a rough guide, try to get to a point where you can average 15-20 km/hr on flat roads, and build your kilometre total distance in training to be out on the bike for 2-3 hours (roughly 40km/25mi) for two days straight. This will usually put you in a good position to be ready for your tour. The more training you do, the more you will enjoy the cycling.

  • Can I hire a bike?

If you don't want to bring your own bike then it's possible to hire a bike. Whilst the tour operator doesn't have their own bikes to hire, they can put you in touch with their local bike shop and you can pay them directly for bike hire. The tour operator can pick up the hire bike for you the day before the tour and drop it off after the tour as well (they don't charge for the pick up/drop off service).

  • Which type of bike is best for the tour?

A comfortable road bike or touring bike is probably best, however a hybrid is also fine if you are more comfortable on a hybrid and are confident in cycling the daily distances and average speed of the tour. Note that these bikes can be around 20% slower than a road bike.

  • What type of luggage should I use?

It is recommended you bring a soft bag or backpack. It's advised not to bring a suitcase as they are bulky, difficult to stow on board vehicles or trailers and heavy. You may be required to lift or carry your own luggage from time to time, e.g. into accommodation. The tour operator expects your bag to be no heavier than 15kg, making it easy to manage for you and the staff. Any excess luggage may need to be stored or forwarded on to your final destination at your own expense. Information about what to pack is included as part of your Pre-Departure information. Generally, it is advised that you pack as light as possible.

  • What items can I carry during the ride?

It's suggested that you carry a spare tube, a full water bottle and your own personal goods such as phone, wallet and rain gear, on your bike
with you. The Tour Operator will transport your luggage, drawstring day bags, food & extra water. A more detailed list of things to bring and not bring is on our ‘Tour Preparation Guide’ which is sent out to you before the ride.

    What are the details?
We know that many people are keen to start making travel plans for the future as our governments begin to form an exit strategy from COVID-19 restrictions. Making those plans adds a much-needed light at the end of the tunnel for us all, but there are still many uncertainties surrounding when and how travel will resume, both interstate, and internationally. With this in mind, we introduce this temporary ‘free cancellation policy’ to give you some peace of mind as you look to the future.

From 12 May until 31 July, 2020 secure your place on any of our upcoming tours and receive a full refund if you need to cancel (up to 1 August 2020)
Coronavirus (COVID-19) Information Australian Tours departing 2020/2021 (Updated 12 May 2020)

Our customers’ health and safety is always at the forefront of our minds when planning and running tours and continues to be so as we monitor the COVID-19 situation across the world. AllTrails will continue to make operational decisions based on informed advice which could include postponing or adjusting tour plans. Informed advice is based on information provided by local, state and federal governments and health agencies and other appropriate authorities.

We have postponed all tours which were due to depart between April and August 2020 and continue to monitor the safety and viability of tours from September 2020. If necessary, we may postpone a tour, or make some adjustments such as re-routing our itinerary to avoid areas of concern if that is possible. Please note that we will, where possible, try to make a judgement on the viability of a tour at least 30 days prior to departure.

In arranging the tours we enjoy together, you would appreciate that a lot of work goes into preparation. Other businesses we use such as accommodation and others, require deposits and/or fees to hold bookings. As a business, our policies are influenced by these factors and the costs incurred in providing these tours to you.

Here is our policy for all future tours scheduled from September 2020 onwards for amendments, credits and refunds related to COVID-19 (note: as COVID-19 is now a known event, we have adjusted our amend/credit policy for this ongoing situation, adding greater flexibility for our customers).

Policy if AllTrails postpones or cancels a tour:

Days from tour meeting date: 30+

    • Transfer to another current AllTrails tour*: forfeit amount $0, full balance transferred to another tour
    • ‘Held Credit’ for a future AllTrails tour (to end of 2022)*: forfeit amount $0, full balance held ‘in credit’
    • Refund: refund of monies paid, less $400 non-refundable deposit to be held ‘in credit’ for a future tour

    • Refund: refund of monies paid, less 20% of total tour package price capped at $800 p/person

The above policies apply to postponements/cancellations relating to COVID-19 only. For all other cancellations, our standard Terms & Conditions apply.

Due to the near-term uncertainty around future travel, we currently have a special offer for new bookings:

Please pass on my thanks to all the crew for a fantastic tour. The personalized, professional and ‘no fuss’ attention to detail approach by the team made a great trip into a fantastic trip. I’ll be back for more next year. I have been wearing my Jersey while being out and about and also in the Gong ride just over a week ago, love the hi-vis colours. Every time I wear it someone asks me ‘which ride did you do’.....so it’s also a highly recognized jersey. See you on the Road.
