Step back into prehistoric times as you pedal along the ‘valley of mankind’ to see 25,000-year-old cave paintings, then marvel at the medieval castles perched above the Dordogne river. Indulge your gastronomic desires with local gourmet specialities. The Dordogne is a significant region of France for a number of reasons, not least of which includes a history of war. Being the center of the 100-year war with England, this resulted in a myriad of fortified villages being built high on limestone cliffs, today presenting a stunning reminder of this past. Medieval villages are certainly a highlight; in particular, the village of Rocamadour was an important waypoint for pilgrims making the long journey to Santiago de Compostella, and there are many fine medieval churches along the route enabling you to stop and take in these incredible structures (and take a break of course!)

It’s not all about historical references though, with the region producing possibly the most famous of all French dishes – foie gras – in addition to world-class truffles and cheeses sought after even in France. The fertile valleys produced by the Dordogne River itself, of course, lend themselves to wine appellations, and there is no shortage of superb wines to sample. Your tour includes an opportunity to get up close and personal with the famous river, with an optional canoe excursion included in the itinerary. The Dordogne is also renowned for its caves. The caves of Lascaux are home to some of the finest examples of pre-historic art and the area is dotted with Cro-magnon caves and settlements, many of which you will have the opportunity to visit.
