  • Where does the tour start and end?

The tour starts in Dobbiaco/Villabassa and ends in Mestre (Venice). Fly in/out of Venice Airport Marco Polo (VCE).

You will need to make your own way to the start point, which is approximately 4 hours by bus from Venice.  Dobbiaco is also accessible from Innsbruck (Austria) or Munich (Germany). Private transfers are available and are approximately £400GBP.

  • How long is the tour? How many cycling days?

The tour is 8 days long with 6 days of cycling.

  • What's the tour like?

This trip is classified as easy & moderate. Cycle for around three to five hours a day, mostly on paved roads. Longer days follow good-quality surfaces with minimal elevation gain. Previous cycle touring experience is helpful but not essential, and a reasonable level of fitness is recommended.

Average distance per day: 18.5mi-37mi (30km-60km)
Maximum distance per day: 50mi (80km)
Average elevation gain per day: 330ft-1,310ft (100m-400m)
Maximum elevation gain per day: 1,970ft (600m)

Most of the cycling takes place on dedicated tarmac cycle paths, often following rivers. Where needed, we use the quietest possible lanes to connect towns and villages, keeping away from major roads for the majority of the route.

  • Should I have travel insurance?

Yes. It is a condition of joining this holiday that you must be fully insured against medical and personal accident risks (to include repatriation costs and air ambulance or helicopter rescue services where appropriate). On arrival in destination for your trip, you will be asked to present details to your leader or local representative of your policy.

  • What is a self-guided tour?

This is a self-guided trip designed for you if you prefer to cycle independently, while still having support to remove the stress of logistics and planning. Accommodations are arranged in advance, and you’ll receive a map and detailed route notes, with bags transported from one hotel to the next, allowing you to ride at your own pace.

It’s important that you feel comfortable reading maps and following route notes. These are made as accurate as possible and are regularly checked. Whenever possible, cycle tracks and quiet roads are used to make the rides enjoyable, though occasionally busier routes may need to be followed.

Because this is a self-guided holiday, there is no group or leader. While others may depart on the same date as you, you won’t be organized together. Each day, route notes begin with an overview and advice on stops for lunch, followed by detailed directions. Notes also include a 24-hour emergency assistance number. In urgent situations, hotel staff can usually arrange a taxi or come to pick you, though a charge may apply.

  • Is there a water bottle on the bike? Are there stops to fill up with water?

Standard bike bottle holders (cages) are on the bike and are designed for bottles with a diameter of approximately 73–74 mm (2.8–2.9 inches). You will need to bring your own bottle. There will also be a pannier should your bottle not fit.

Places to stop for water along the way will be marked on the app you're given prior to departure, however, some could potentially not be in use. It is always recommended to take plenty of water with you.  Hydration tablets can be handy and you could also consider a Camelback type of backpack: https://www.camelbak.com/shop/hydration-packs/

  • Is there any storage on the bikes?

Yes, there is one pannier per bike.

  • Are there any luggage restrictions?

Luggage is limited to one piece per person, maximum weight of 20kg. Either a suitcase or backpack is fine.

  • Do I need to bring a helmet?

Yes, please bring your own helmet.

  • Is there a welcome meeting? Am I fitted to my bike?

No welcome briefing or bike fitting is provided on this tour. Upon arrival at your first hotel, customers will receive their bikes and travel documents. On some occasions, customers may be asked to collect their bikes at the local bike office. A QR code will be provided for a video which will provide customers with further information about their trip. Should customers need any further assistance, they can contact the local partner or visit their office in Dobbiaco until 18:00.

Great value, great first use of Exodus Travels. My wife & I traveled this tour together & both were happy with the variety of lodging each night and the support provided for self guided route. Using the GPS enabled smart phone app from the start was a game changer, a few other groups who rode separately and tried to ride the route instead following road signs got lost a few times & added 15km to the day’s route distance, no problems other than more saddle time then anticipated.
